Fairfax County Chapter, NSDAR
Service to the Community

The chapter enthusiastically embraces the spirit of Today’s DAR to “Rise and Shine for America!” Through our various fundraising efforts and our many volunteer hours, we serve our community.

Promote Patriotism

We have excelled in promoting patriotism and honoring our military and veterans. The chapter supports Wreaths Across America, Honor Flights, the USO, and various active duty and veterans causes.

The chapter participates in the national Constitution Week event, which promotes the reading and understanding of the Constitution of the United States of America through proclamations, displays, and the distribution of Constitution Week related materials to schools, libraries, government centers, and the general public. The chapter participates yearly in a Naturalization Ceremony to welcome new citizens by leading them in the Pledge of Allegiance and presenting each with a Flag of the United States of America.

Preserve American History

To preserve American history, we traditionally mark the graves of deceased members with the DAR Insignia. From the beginning, the chapter marked many historical locations and events. Since the mid-1950s, the chapter has maintained the grounds surrounding the location of two of the original 40 boundary stones of the District of Columbia, boundary stones SW6 and SW7.

Education

As early as 1907, the chapter established an American History Essay Contest for county schools and today awards scholarships to Vienna high school seniors and contributes General Education Development (GED) Certificates to the Fairfax County Adult Education High School to assist students taking the GED exam.

Following the lead of the NSDAR in the 1920s, the chapter began a decades-long relationship in support of the various DAR established and recognized schools with funding, books, clothing, and materials. We support our chapter’s Literacy Promotion Committee program through the collection of adult and children’s books for distribution at schools, hospitals, shelters, and groups focusing on the underserved.

Service

The chapter has donated garments to a woman’s shelter, socks for the homeless, winter clothing for children, and Christmas gifts for a retired veteran’s home. The chapter has adopted a section of roadway through the State Adopt-A-Highway Program. In support of combating the COVID-19 pandemic, members have sewn and donated homemade cloth masks.
